First Steps, by Orynn Murphy
This piece is a simple marimba duet in which the first marimba part will have the melody for the most part, trading off with the second marimba part occasionally. The piece starts with a melody and plays around with the theme in different styles. The melody is first reharmonized and then brought into completely different styles, Latin and then into a different key and time signature. The melody gets tossed around but never returns to the original form, ending with a section that is very different from what the theme originally was, and finally ends with a familiar cadence. Imagine two young percussionists messing around with a piece of music for the first time, playing around with the music, getting distracted and never really returning to the original piece of music.
No sticking is written in as I feel it is best for each player to determine a comfortable sticking for them. Have fun with this piece! A lot of percussion music is serious and chop heavy, so relax a little with this piece. It is meant to be light-hearted and playful.
Number of Players: 2
Instrumentation: Two Marimbas (4.3 octave)
